A risk assessment identifies workplace hazards, evaluates how likely they are to cause harm and considers the possible severity. It then determines whether existing precautions are sufficient or additional controls are required.
Start with the task risk assessment, then consider working conditions, access and egress, duration and frequency of use. Select equipment intended for the environment, such as fibreglass access equipment where electrical hazards exist, and follow the manufacturer's instructions.
A competent person has the appropriate training, knowledge, experience and qualifications to identify risks in a particular situation and determine the measures required to control them.
The scaffold duty rating must suit the work and total load. As a general guide, light, medium and heavy-duty platforms are designed for different load classes. Always confirm the system capacity in the supplier's technical information and include people, tools and materials in the calculation.
A scaffold requires a firm, level foundation, suitable sole plates where needed, correct bracing and ties, and safe clearance from trenches or excavations. It must be erected and inspected by competent people in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.
Platforms should be fully decked, secured against uplift and kept clear. Open sides and ends require the specified guardrails, mid rails and toe boards. Never overload platforms, remove ties or guardrails, or climb the rails for additional height.
A product test records how a specific sample performed against defined test conditions at a particular time. On its own, it does not demonstrate ongoing conformity across every production batch.
Product certification is independent third-party confirmation that a product and its supporting production systems meet defined standards and continue to be assessed against the applicable requirements.
We consider both the individual product and the manufacturing process. A single successful sample test is useful evidence, but consistent production controls are also required to maintain product quality.
Independent review is essential where the applicable conformity route requires it. A qualified third party provides an objective assessment of the product, technical documentation and design or production process.
Relevant technical expertise, independence, a strong international reputation and a clear understanding of the standards for the intended markets are the main considerations.
Work should be planned and supervised from the start by competent people. The plan should select appropriate equipment and account for site conditions, access, potential fall distance and consequences, duration of use, and rescue or evacuation procedures.
Stock orders are commonly dispatched on the next working day after confirmation. Allow additional time for large quantities, made-to-order products and delivery to distant locations.
Check the duty-rating label on the ladder and confirm that the rating covers the user, tools and carried materials. If the label is missing or unreadable, stop using the ladder and contact the distributor or manufacturer.
